How Do I Fill Gaps In My Containment?

Every data center manager knows that improving the efficiency of their energy consumption is an ongoing battle and aisle containment issues are a necessarily present part of the deal. These days, aisle containment has begun to take precedence when it comes to reducing energy costs, with the most popular form of containment being hot aisle/cold aisle containment.

Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle Containment

The logic behind this type of containment is that it’s best to isolate the hot air from the cold air to maximize cooling efficiency. By configuring your data center in the hot aisle/cold aisle configuration, hot exhaust air from equipment flows into one aisle while the front of the servers face each other in the cold aisle. To prevent mixing of the hot and cold air, physical containment of the two aisles is necessary.

Aisle Containment

Filling is gaps in aisle containment can be a challenge, but there are a number of efficient and cost-effective solutions that you can implement including:

  • Blanking panels – their purpose is to fill in empty RU spaces in server cabinets and separate supply and exhaust airflows.
  • Foam Gap Seals – these expanding foam strips help to keep exhaust air and mixing supply separated.  They can be sued to seal gaps below server cabinets, above containment panels and in cabinet rows.
  • Filler Panels – these have an advantage over vertical strips in that they can accommodate server cabinets of multiple heights, preventing gaps between the containment system and shorter racks and eliminating air leakage.
