5 Tips for Cooling High Density Racks and Hot Spots in Your Data Center or Server Room
As a data center operator, you are aware that the average power consumption of a single server rack is around 1.7kW. However, a rack that is filled with high density servers can consume more than 20kW. Such a high load dramatically exceeds the typical data centers power and cooling capacities. In this situation you need to know how to cool hot spots and high density racks. Here are five tips to help you.
- Spreading the load: this refers to spreading the high density servers over multiple racks so as to make sure extra heat is not generated. For this to be effective, you need to make sure that no single rack exceeds the rack density for the room’s cooling system.
- Supplemental cooling: if your server room is relatively small and you don’t have a large amount of equipment, you could opt for a supplemental cooling system, particularly if you have racks that have a density exceeding the design value for the room cooling system.
- Hot spot cooling: if your server room has areas which have high cooling capacity, you can allocate these locations to your high density servers. This method will only work if you completely separate the high density racks in those areas.
- Cooling the whole room: though this option may initially seem to be the best, it is difficult to implement because of the massive variation between racks. This also makes it the least cost effective choice.
